How to become a backflow tester
The complete path to certification as a backflow prevention assembly tester: the experience prerequisite, the 40-hour course, the written and practical exams, and how to land your first testing work.
Every building connected to a public water system has points where the drinking water supply could be pulled or pushed backward into itself. Backflow prevention assemblies are the mechanical devices installed at those points to stop that from happening, and someone has to prove each one still works. That someone is a certified backflow prevention assembly tester. It is a trade credential with a defined path, a defined exam, and steady repeat demand, because most water authorities require assemblies to be tested on a recurring schedule for as long as they remain in service.
This guide covers the whole path: what the work is, who qualifies, how the training and exams operate under the most widely recognized credential, ASSE 5110, and what to do in the weeks after you pass. If you are a plumber, an irrigation contractor, a fire sprinkler technician, or a municipal water worker, you already hold most of what this credential requires. The rest is a course, two exams, and some administrative legwork with your local water authorities.
What the job actually is
A backflow prevention assembly tester verifies that installed backflow preventers are working. You connect a differential-pressure test kit to the assembly's test cocks, run a defined sequence of readings, and record whether the check valves and relief mechanisms hold within required limits. You document the result, submit it to the water authority or the property owner's compliance service, and either pass the assembly or flag it for repair. A single visit might involve one device on an irrigation line or dozens of devices in a hospital mechanical room.
The work rewards people who are methodical. The test procedures are prescriptive, the paperwork matters, and the consequence of sloppiness is not an unhappy customer but a potential contamination path into the drinking water supply. Testers who build a reputation for clean documentation and reliable scheduling tend to keep customers for years, because testing is recurring and property managers strongly prefer not to shop for a new tester every cycle.
Day to day, the job is a mix of driving, fieldwork, and reporting. Assemblies live on commercial domestic water services, fire sprinkler risers, irrigation systems, boiler feeds, and dedicated fire lines, so a full schedule can move you from a strip mall backflow vault to a high-rise mechanical room to a row of residential irrigation devices in a single day. The physical work is light compared with rough-in plumbing, but the pace and the recordkeeping are relentless when routes are full.
The five-year experience requirement, honestly
Start with the prerequisite, because it filters more people than the exams do. ASSE 5110 certification requires a minimum of five years of documented practical experience in installation or service of plumbing, mechanical, fire protection, lawn irrigation, or a related field. That is not a suggestion. Schools and certifying bodies ask for documentation, and you should be prepared to show work history that a reasonable reviewer would accept as five years in one of those trades.
The good news is the definition is broad. This is not a plumbers-only credential. The requirement recognizes that backflow assemblies live in several trades at once: on domestic water lines, on fire sprinkler risers, on irrigation systems, and inside mechanical rooms. Time spent in any of those environments counts toward the prerequisite.
Fields that commonly satisfy the experience requirement include:
- Plumbing installation or service, licensed or working under a licensed contractor
- Mechanical and HVAC work that includes hydronic or domestic water piping
- Fire protection and fire sprinkler installation, inspection, or service
- Lawn irrigation and landscape sprinkler installation or service
- Municipal water distribution, treatment, or meter service work
- Related utility or facilities maintenance roles with documented water system responsibilities
If you are short of five years, the honest answer is to keep working and plan the certification into your career rather than around it. Apprentices and early-career techs can sometimes take training early, but the certification itself requires the documented experience. Talk to the school you plan to attend about exactly what documentation they accept: employer letters, license history, and job records are the usual forms.
Step one: find out what your jurisdiction accepts
Before you spend anything on a course, make one round of phone calls. Certification for backflow testers is recognized and regulated at the state and water-authority level, and it varies by jurisdiction. Many areas accept ASSE certification. Some run their own state or regional programs. Some recognize ABPA certification alongside or instead of ASSE. A few require testers to register with each individual water purveyor whose service area they work in.
Call the cross-connection control program at the water utility where you expect to do most of your work and ask three questions: which certifications they accept, whether testers must register or be listed with them, and whether they maintain a public list of approved testers that customers use to find you. The answers shape which course you take and where. This single step prevents the worst outcome in this process, which is paying for and passing a course your local authority does not recognize.
Check before you enroll
Requirements vary by state and by water authority. Confirm with your state drinking water program and your local water utility's cross-connection control office which certifications they accept before choosing a school.
Step two: choose an ASSE Accredited School
ASSE does not train testers directly. Training and testing run through ASSE Accredited Schools, which are independent training providers approved to deliver the courses and exams. Schedules and pricing come from the schools themselves, so costs vary by provider and region. When comparing schools, the accreditation is the non-negotiable part; everything else is logistics.
Ask a prospective school these questions before you commit:
- Is the course currently accredited by ASSE for the 5110 tester certification, and can they show it
- Does the course fee include both the written and practical exams, or are those billed separately
- How many training rigs and assembly types are on the practical floor, and how much hands-on time each student actually gets
- What the retake policy is if you fail either exam
- Whether the school's certification is accepted by the water authorities where you plan to work
Format matters too. The 40 hours is a minimum, and schools structure it differently: five consecutive full days, a series of weekend sessions, or a split of self-paced theory plus in-person lab time. Pick the format that lets you actually absorb hydraulics material, not just the one that fits your week best. The practical exam does not care how convenient your schedule was.
What the 40 hours cover
The minimum 40-hour course is the core of the credential, and good schools use every hour. Expect roughly half the time on theory and half on hands-on work at test rigs. The theory side covers why backflow happens and how each assembly type defeats it. The lab side drills the test procedures until the sequence is muscle memory.
Topic areas you should expect, in plain terms:
- Hydraulics fundamentals: pressure, head, and why water moves backward under backsiphonage and backpressure conditions
- Cross-connection concepts: actual and potential connections between potable water and anything that is not potable water
- Degree of hazard: the difference between a contaminant that can sicken people and a pollutant that mainly affects water quality
- Assembly construction: check valves, relief valves, air inlets, shutoffs, and test cocks, and what each part does
- Field test procedures for each assembly family, run repeatedly on live rigs
- Recordkeeping, reporting, and how test results flow to water authorities
Treat the hydraulics material seriously even if you have decades in the trade. Plenty of experienced installers can pipe in an assembly perfectly and still stumble on differential-pressure theory, because installing a device and proving its internal checks hold are different skills. The written exam draws on exactly this material.
The written exam: 100 questions, 70 percent to pass
The ASSE 5110 written exam is 100 questions, and you need 70 percent or better to pass. It is a knowledge exam, not a trick exam. If you attended the full course, worked the practice problems, and understand why each step of each test procedure exists rather than just memorizing the order, you are preparing correctly.
Where candidates get in trouble is treating the class as a formality. Forty hours of material compressed into one week is a lot, especially the theory half. Take notes by hand, ask the instructor to re-run any test sequence you cannot explain out loud, and use the evenings during the course to review. The exam typically comes at the end of the same week, so there is no long runway to study afterward.
Study tactics that consistently work for tradespeople in this course:
- Explain each test procedure out loud, step by step, to another student or to yourself
- For every reading in a procedure, know what a failing number means about the hardware inside
- Sketch each assembly family from memory and label the checks, relief components, and test cocks
- Do not skip the hazard and cross-connection theory in favor of pure procedure drilling
The practical exam: prove it on real assemblies
The hands-on practical exam is where the credential earns its reputation. You test real assemblies on a rig in front of an evaluator, covering the assembly types addressed by ASSE standards 1013, 1015, 1020, and 1056. In field terms, that means demonstrating correct procedure across the main families of backflow preventers you will meet on the job, including reduced pressure principle types, double check types, and vacuum breaker types.
The evaluator is watching procedure, not just results. Hooking up hoses in the wrong order, skipping a bleed, misreading the gauge, or failing to restore the assembly and its shutoffs to service correctly can cost you even if your final numbers look plausible. The fix is repetition: use every minute of rig time your school offers, and narrate the procedure to yourself as you run it until the sequence is automatic.
If you fail either exam, ask the school about its retake policy before you leave the building. Policies differ by school, and most people who miss on the first attempt pass on a retake once they know where the gap was.
After you pass: get listed and get legal
Passing makes you certified. It does not automatically make you a tester anyone can hire. Most water authorities maintain lists of approved or registered testers, and property owners are usually told to pick from that list. Getting onto those lists is your first administrative job as a certified tester.
Work through this checklist in your first weeks:
- Register with every water purveyor in your service area that maintains a tester list, and provide your certification documents
- Confirm whether your state drinking water program requires separate registration or licensure on top of certification
- Obtain the test report forms each authority requires, since many use their own forms or online portals
- Verify your employer's or your own contractor licensing and insurance covers testing work in your jurisdiction
- Have your test kit's calibration documentation ready, since authorities commonly ask for proof of gauge accuracy
Treat the registration process itself as a first impression. The people who run cross-connection programs talk to property owners every day, and a tester who submits complete paperwork, responds promptly, and files clean reports gets remembered. Some authorities will quietly steer confused callers toward testers who make their program's life easier.
The test kit
Your one significant tool purchase is a backflow test kit: a differential-pressure gauge instrument, in either a 3-valve or 5-valve configuration, with hoses and fittings. Schools train on one or both configurations, and either can test the common assembly families. Buy quality, because your readings are your product, and keep the case, hoses, and bleed valves clean and protected between jobs.
Gauge calibration
Many jurisdictions require periodic calibration of test gauges and proof of accuracy before they will accept your test reports. This is commonly required, so confirm the expectation with your water authority and keep your calibration certificates with your registration paperwork.
Getting the first jobs
If you are already employed in plumbing, irrigation, or fire protection, your first tests will likely come from your existing employer's customers. Shops add testing as a service line precisely because it is recurring: an assembly tested this cycle needs testing again next cycle, and customers rarely switch testers without a reason.
If you are building your own book of business, the water authority lists are your marketing engine. When an authority sends a property owner a test-due notice, that owner opens the approved tester list and starts calling. Being on the list, answering the phone, and turning reports around quickly is a genuinely effective client acquisition strategy in this trade. Beyond that, introduce yourself to property managers, irrigation companies without an in-house tester, and fire protection firms that sub out their backflow work.
Expect a seasonal rhythm if irrigation is part of your market. Seasonal startup of sprinkler systems concentrates test demand into a compressed stretch of the year, and testers who can run efficient residential routes during that window do very well. Commercial, fire line, and mechanical room testing spreads more evenly across the calendar, which is a good argument for building a mixed book rather than leaning on one property type.
Price and schedule with the recurrence in mind. A tester who handles a property portfolio's assemblies every cycle, keeps the records straight, and flags failing devices with a clear repair path becomes very hard to replace. That is the business you are building from the first job onward.
The three-year clock
ASSE 5110 certification runs for a three-year period. Recertification requires a minimum 8-hour recertification class, a 50-question written exam, and a hands-on practical exam, all arranged through ASSE Accredited Schools. You can recertify up to six months before your expiration date without losing any time on your cycle, which is exactly what you should do: book the recert class early in your renewal window rather than gambling on a seat in the final weeks.
You will be joining a large, established profession. ASSE reports more than 19,000 ASSE-certified backflow professionals working across all 50 states and parts of Canada. The path is defined, the demand recurs on a schedule, and the hardest prerequisite is the five years of trade experience you may already have. From here, it is a course, two exams, and a phone call to your water authority.
